Purchase high-quality Persian and Oriental rugs for sale from Rugs Original.

Although Persian and Oriental rugs are grouped together as a category of rugs, they are in fact vastly different in terms of design, durability and workmanship. They are exquisite and unique in their own way and sought-after as luxury pieces in beautiful homes but true rug enthusiasts know their individual worth. We provide customers with a wide range of Oriental and Persian rugs for sale in South Africa. View our options on our website now.

Persian and Oriental rugs are both renowned for their ancient intricate designs, natural wool fibers, durability and unique craftsmanship, and are high value items, as their value increases over time. A common question people ask when looking at these two luxury rugs is: what is the difference between a Persian rug and an Oriental rug?

The simple answer is; all Persian rugs are Oriental rugs but not all Oriental rugs are Persian rugs. An authentic Persian rug originates from present-day Iran. Any other rug on sale that’s prized for its intricate designs, vibrant colours and outstanding craftsmanship that does not originate from Iran, is an Oriental rug.

Place of origin

Important to know is that Persia refers to modern-day Iran, while the “orient” -[east] refers to the entire geographical area in which these handmade rugs are constructed. In order to qualify as a Persian rug, the carpet must be made in Iran.Any rug made in Afghanistan, Turkey, India or another regional country is an Oriental rug.

The big difference between Persian and Oriental rugs is their country of origin.Persian rugs date back to ancient times in the Persian Empire, what is now modern-day Iran. Oriental rugs typically originate from India, China, Egypt, Turkey,Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Knot count

The type of knot used in the rugs is another differentiating factor. Purist Persian rugs are hand-knotted on weaving looms using an asymmetrical, or Senneh knot, which is open to one side, while Oriental rugs are tied with symmetrical Ghiordes knots.Rugs woven with Senneh knots are generally more symmetrical and precise, and are softer and less bulky than rugs woven with Ghiordes knots.

Quality workmanship of our amazing Persian rugs South Africa

An artisan using the Senneh knot (typically used for authentic Persian rugs) has the joy of creative freedom. The weaver can create a far more intricate design with a lush pile, where the knot allows for extreme precision in multi-layered patterns.

For Oriental rugs, the quality of workmanship really depends on where the rug is made; either in a professional rug workshop or in the home of a weaver in a traditional rural village. The warps and wefts of Oriental rugs are usually wool/cotton or silk, and the knot count produced in professional rug workshops is generally higher than those produced in traditional village workshops.

The quality of Oriental and Persian rugs in South Africa is higher because the weavers work to high quality standards, while home weavers in villagers produce rugs that are more rustic and individualised.

A rule of thumb when deciding whether to buy a Persian or Oriental rug is the higher the knot count, the higher the value, and higher the price. Persian rugs are handwoven with a high knot count which has traditionally made them more valuable than Oriental rugs.

Pricing

Rug connoisseurs hold Persian rugs in high regard, and they are classified as valuable collectors’ items, especially those that originate from the Arak and Isfahanregion of Iran. However, today authentic Oriental rugs are respected for their unique designs and quality and have grown in popularity, particularly as they tend to be more affordable than a genuine Persian rug.

Material used

Artisans use wool or silk to create an authentic Persian rug. Likewise, Oriental rugs are also made from wool and silk. The big difference is the knot count and place of origin. Contact us today to find out more about our top Oriental and Persian rugs for sale.
